One of my proudest moments this past year was to be able to help present the Newfoundland and Labrador Laubach Literacy Council’s Student of the Year award to John Coombs and to celebrate his achievements in learning. I first met John 12 years ago when I started my position as Executive Director and he remained a dedicated Laubach learner for all of my time here at NLLLC. In spite of his learning difficulties and being ignored by the education system in place 40 or 50 years ago, John never lost his desire to learn and progressed with determination and persistence to improve both his literacy and math skills. Today, it is with great sadness that I learn of his passing. On behalf of NLLLC I extend my deepest condolences to his family and friends. I enjoyed his weekly visits to my office and sharing his joy when he completed a new book or new lesson. He will surely be remembered here at NLLLC.

Rest easy Johnny.
